Everything goes bad over a period of time. you did not say whats wrong with it. Be sure you replace it with a FACTORY GM CAP FROM DEALER. Are it will go bad again.
Yes! If you have a suspicion that it is bad, just replace it. Very cheap repair. The distributor cap may also need replacing. Look for cracks and arching.

I fixed the problem it was the air gap.

your distributor usually just connects to your oil pump to help circulate oil around the engine, if your fuel pump went bad at the same time it might just be a coincidence or your bein ripped off.
