If the person is a practicing Catholic who has not remarried, there would be no problem. However, if the person has remarried without an annulment or is not a practicing Catholic, no that person can not be a sponsor.

The answer depends on what you are really asking.

The answer to your question at face value "Can a 'divorced' Catholic be a sponsor for an RCIA convert" is YES.

However, if you really mean to ask "Can a 'divorced' and REMARRIED Catholic be a sponsor for an RCIA convert, then the answer would be NO.

Contrary to popular belief Divorce is permitted in the Catholic Church. A "Divorce" is defined as a period of time in which a married couple lives apart due to personal reasons. Divorce does NOT DISSOLVE a marriage. A "divorced" couple is still married, and at any time they can come back together. They may also decide to live apart for the rest of their lives. Living apart does NOT dissolve the marriage, however.

What is NOT permitted is "Divorce" and "Remarriage" because one is not free to enter into a second (another) marriage when one is already validly married, for such is adultery. This has basis in Divine Law. God does not intend Divorce and remarriage.

Usually a "sponsor" must be a Catholic in good standing. Depending on the circumstances of the divorce and the intentions and perceptions of your sponsor, he or she may or may not be a good choice. It would be best to go to a priest and find out before any action is taken. Unless there are circumstances that dictate otherwise, it should be fine.

Sponsors are not strictly required for the sacrament of confirmation, so you would need to check with your pastor as the rules will vary from diocese to diocese if they allow sponsors.

Does anyone have to sponsor you to attend RCIA?

A sponsor for RCIA should be a practicing member of the Catholic Church who is at least 16 years of age. You need a sponsor for RCIA, and you can always go to the Church you wish to become part of to ask for help finding a sponsor if you do not have one and have nobody in mind. You can begin the process without one. :)

Can you marry a Catholic if you are a born again Christian?

Catholics may only marry other Catholics. In the event of a Catholic falling in love with a non-Catholic, the usual recourse is for the non-Catholic to attend RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). This is an excellent course for the non-Catholic to learn about the faith into which they are marrying, even if they do not convert. Should they decide not to convert, then the Catholic must receive special permission from the Bishop along with certain assurances. It is always best if the non-Catholic can convert, marriage can be difficult in the best of times, and it certainly helps if both the spouses are on the same page with regard to religion, raising the children, being open to life, etc.
