Of course they can. They can do what they want unless its breaking the law. Religion is something you can choose and no one can say other wise. That is unless you dont live in a country that has freedom of religion unlike america.

∙ 14y agoIf you dont tell anyone then its not like they will know by the power of God not to give you communion. You shouldn't take communion tho until you have confessed to a priest. Catholics are forgiven for anything they are truly sorry for through confession.

Divorce is always very sad. Sometimes it's necessary. A divorced Catholic may receive Holy Communion as long as he/she is not in a state of mortal/grave sin.
It is not divorce that stains our soul mortally/gravely, it is re-marriage w/out being released from our 1st marriage which is the sin b/c w/out an annulment of the 1st marriage, the 2nd marriage is adultery -- violation of the 10 commandments.

God does not recognize Caesar's (the State's) divorce decree.ANALOGY: If a couple married civilly and before God (sacramentally) and only obtained an Annulment through the Catholic Church but didn't bother to obtain a civil divorce decree and then married again, what would happen? He/she would be arrested for BIGOMY. It's essentially the same. The Church (and Our Lord) does not accept a CIVIL divorce as severing a SACRAMENTAL covenant/solemn. promise. And, in fact, God does not recognize divorce/severing of a covenant/solemn promise. . .unless the ingredients NECESSARY to make that promise/covenant was NOT present, in both spouses, at the time they married and took that OATH. Listen to the words we say during the wedding ceremony. We HAVE taken a solemn oath. It cannot be just dismissed.

If you are living a sinful lifestyle, say, living together without the benefit of a marriage ceremony, then you must intend to live chastely from then on. No one may "take" Holy Communion, they may only "receive" it (usually from a priest or Extraordinary Minister) if they are in a state of grace. An innocent victim of divorce who has not attempted to marry again, may be in a state of grace and may be able to receive Holy Communion. If you are in this situation you need to speak with a priest, preferably in the confessional, he will be able to advise you on your particular situation.

He would be committed a mortal sin by deliberately missing Mass on any Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation.
