From everything I have read, and I have done a lot of research on it, yes, provided the tree receives enough water. They apparently like to receive 2000 ml of annual rainfall and Phoenix gets around 179 ml. So, you would have to irrigate plenty and don't plant it where pets or livestock have access because when the fruit is ready to fall - look out! I think a front yard would be more suitable. I'd love to plant one but I have been unable to find a tree or anyone that will ship a tree and planting from seed would take 6 years to produce. If you manage to find a place that will sell you a Durian tree, please let us know. I love the aroma and find it very mild. When I read about it online, in Wikipedia and some other websites - talk about massive exaggeration! Anyway, good luck.
