As of 2009, currently there is a ongoing debate on whether Homosexuals should be able to donate blood or not. There are online petitions personally speaking out against the ban, but later on in the future, or late 2009, they may allow it. Right now, it is against the law. Here is a online petition website online (the link) http://www.petitiononline.com/10131989/petition.html

As of 2017:

  • There are no restrictions on gay women
  • Gay men must state that they have been celibate for at least one year. This is based on the mistaken belief that gay men are more likely to tell lies than straight men about their sexual history. Proof of this comes from the fact that gay men who are faithfully married cannot donate blood.

Yes (in practical terms). Although FDA guidelines do not actually restrict volunteer blood donation based on sexual orientation, It's true that deferrals are based on outdated notions of high risk activity, banning the majority of gay men.

Current guidelines require a deferral for any male who has had sexual contact with another male, even once in the previous year, even if he is faithfully married to his husband, or if he practices safe sex.

Straight men are not questioned, even those who do not practice safe sex.
