It's not so much the guy is afraid of the girl but of afraid of something more personal to himself.
A guy can be afraid of the choice's he make's and maybe the girl he make's them with but not the girl in general unless she has a trait of being abusive.
But the fear of liking the girl is not the girl's fault, she didn't tell you to like her. But it must be something more internal. Something a little more personal than being afraid to like someone so much.
I think ultimately in the end the guy is afraid of getting hurt and doesn't want that to be an option or maybe doesn't realize it and choose's to ignore the fact.
Case an point, a guy shouldn't be afraid for liking a girl so much, but I'm not saying it's not possible.
