Usually the fetus is protected from this kind of injury by the mother's body and the amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus. It would depend on how hard they stepped, how heavy they were and how many times. Hitting, kicking, falling, etc. usually don't result in miscarriage, it usually will take a severe blow like that of an auto accident or other tremendous injury.
