1. Myth: Skunks are rabies carriers. (Fact: This erroneous statement implies that all skunks carry rabies. All mammals can contract rabies if infected from the bite of a rabid animal. Most wild animals stay clear of skunks to avoid being sprayed in the eyes, so the odds that a skunk will get bitten by another species is rare.)

2. Myth: Skunks are the number one carrier of rabies.(Fact: Unvaccinated outdoor cats and free-roaming dogs are a much higher risk because of their access to wild animals. The reported totals of how many skunks have rabies are very biased numbers. Each county has a different animal that ranks number one.)

3. Myth: Foaming at the mouth is a sure sign of rabies.(Fact: Foaming at the mouth can also be a symptom of distemper, coccidia, round worms, ticks, or other internal or external parasite overload, Diabetes, poisoning, liver failure, epilepsy, Allergies, herpes, and severe dehydration and emaciation, all of which are more common than rabies.)

4. Myth: If you are bitten by a rabid skunk, you will die. (Fact: Research statistics show that 70% of those untreated victims of rabid animal bites did not get ill or contract rabies when they followed proper and immediate cleansing of the wound.) Still, it should not be treated lightly!

5. Myth: Animal rehabilitators might accidentally release rabies-infected orphan skunks. (Fact: Highly unlikely if done right. In the four to five months it takes to rehabilitate baby skunks, any who have rabies would have shed the virus and already died. Any skunks released will have been observed long enough to be confident they do not have rabies.

6. Myth: Skunks carry rabies up to two years. (Fact: This has never been proven. Even IF it were true, you can only get rabies from a bite of a rabid animal up to a week before it shows clinical signs of rabies whether it is two weeks or two years. At that time the rabies would be in the saliva where you could contract the virus. The rest of the "carrying" time you, nor any other animals, would not get rabies.)

It is very rare. It is very common in typical India village to have rat eating the sole skin of the farmers. By definition, the skin is very thick and scaly. Because they are bare foot most of the time. I have never given anti-rabies vaccine for rat bite. These small animals are never the victims of bite by rabid animals. Even if they happen to get rabies, they die quickly and do not spread the disease. the anti-rabies vaccine is not free of side effects. One in ten to thirty thousand patient dies of reaction to the rabies vaccine. That is why the vaccine is not recommended for universal vaccination. Never the less, I did immunized my twin children for rabies. Here the children play and live with stray dogs. But there was definitely a calculated risk. You can not explain the risk versus benefit to the lay judicial people. Doctors are blamed if the patient dies due to reaction of the vaccine. I have observed that the experts of USA refrain from answering the questions on rabies.

Sometimes. Any mammal can carry rabies, but only a tiny portion of animals in any population have rabies. Most animals will die within a month of first infection.

What should you do if your dog gets sprayed directly in the mouth be a skunk?

If the dog got sprayed, it was probably in too close of contact with the skunk. If a dog is foaming after contact with any animal, that's usually a sign of rabies. You should get it checked out with a vet quickly.

Is Rabies vaccine needed after previously vaccinated?

Typically, the rabies vaccine your vet gives to your cat/dog/other animal lasts one year the first time given, and the following rabies shot is usually for three years. Your vet probably sends out reminders to get pets vaccinated, but if your animal gets bitten by a raccoon/skunk/something known to have rabies, you can always take it in to get a booster shot to prevent any chance of your pet getting rabies.

Do elk eat skunk?

Elk are herbivorous, so they don't eat any animals. Even carnivorous animals don't eat skunks. Any animal that attacks a skunk gets sprayed with its horrible smelling scent, which deters any predator except the Great Horned Owl which has no sense of smell.

Why do skunks aim for the eyes?

Actually, skunks pretty much point their butts towards any animal that gets too close, and lets fly. However, in the case of a dog that is barking or snapping at a skunk, this results in the dog's face being closest to the skunk, and increases the likelihood of getting sprayed in the eyes.
