Yes. While in maps, press and hold on a location. It will drop a pin to that location. Then, tap on the pin, and again on the little blue arrow that pops up. On the bottom left of the screen, there is an option to share location via text or email.
Whilst the message is sending, tap "Edit" next to the send bar and select the message that you're supposed to be sending. After selecting the message, click delete. That will stop the message from being sent. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be a quick process so you have to be quick to delete the message before it's sent,
because the message was no sent.
It was probably someone with an iPhone and used the little characters/icons in the text. Only people who have iPhones can see them or they will just look like squares if sent to non iPhone users. :)
