Can a parrot be outside a cage?

It is fine for you to have only one parakeet in a cage, but only if you can spend alot of time around it. Just being by the cage and talking or doing something will be good for the bird. Also the bird will bond to you easier if you only have one!

If you dont have much time to spend with your bird then you may need to consider getting another so it wont be lonely

Yes a parakeet/budgie does have to come out of its cage for at least an hour a day if you don't take it out it will become depressed and start chewing on its preen gland and/or plucking its feathers

more info: i was given 2 zebra finches in a cage. i traded the finches for a parakeet, keeping the cage. the petstore told me that parakeets need cages with horizontal bars, so they can climb easier; the cage i have has vertical bars. i've noticed my keet does slide down the wires. ... should i get a different cage? thanks

Yes. Parrots, by nature, are social birds, flocking together in groups. For this reason, pet parrots bond closely to their owners, and will get lonely without company. Missing their owners, or the companionship of other birds, will make pet parrots very distressed and cause self-destructive behaviour such as feather-plucking.
