What does weaning mean for hamsters?

Weaning is when the young hamsters completely stop using the milk of the mother, the weaning process begins when the hamsters start eating other foods, though also keep drinking the mother's milk. They are completely weaned when the rely on other food and not the mother. This is also usually the point where the hamsters can leave the mother and go to new homes.

Your hamster pees outside of the cage because it doesn't want to get it's cage covered in pee i think. ;)

Male hamsters will urinate outside their cage to mark, like a dog or cat would mark their teritory.

Can dwarf hamsters eat turkey?

Dwarf hamsters, like any animal will eat anything you give them, but I personally do not recommend it. I feel that although they can eat turkey(NOT Pork), it is better to not feed your hamsters, or any pet, table food because it is not always good for their health. I recommend that you stick to feeding your little friend its food specificed for it.

Good luck with your dwarf hamster!

What sedative can you give a dwarf hamster?

I would not sedate a tiny animal without the help of a vet even with herbals. However, hamster's teeth grow continually, so they must always have hard things to chew on. Their food mix should have hard kibble and seeds in the shell in it, or give them wood hamster toys from a pet store.

You should always educate yourself about an animal's behavior before you bring one home. This will prevent the animal being treated unfairly. If your hamster is keeping you up at night, it probably has more to do with his environment than a need to be sedated. They are nocturnal creatures. If you have it in a wire or plastic cage, it is probably hanging off of the sides and chewing. You can prevent this by moving him into a glass aquarium with tall sides and a wire mesh lid. The tall sides will prevent him from climbing up on his toys and chewing the rim. If it is his running in a squeaky wheel, look in your pet store for the silent alternatives. The old fashioned metal ones will eventually all squeak. Also, look into investing in glass and metal water bottles instead of plastic. This will also do away with chewing noises. Be sure the hamster has wood pieces to chew on. You can pick these up at the pet store. I give our old cardboard oatmeal boxes and such when are done with them. This keeps their teeth worn down. If you assess the situation and try to figure out a solution, then you AND your pet can both be happier.

How do you care for an injured dwarf hamster and make sure it is ok?

Dwarf hamsters are very small and it's hard for vets to handle them (from my personal experience). There may not be a way to heal them. If they need surgery, it's very hard to put them under anesthesia. They may or may not come out the same or may not come out at all.

You need to make sure the little hamster is comfy so make sure he/she has cotton wool in his bed, lots of fresh water, salad and other supplies to keep him nourished and his usual food. Also avoid handling him/her.

How do you know if your hamster is pregnant?

just so people know: hamsters don't have to get bigger, some don't show any signs they are pregnant, so use behaviour, and just your own observations such as mating sessions food consumption yes nesting etc to draw this conclusion, but when in doubt, assume they are, and clean the cage as soon as u notice the nesting behaviour, yes mum might get upset but its better than having a dirty cage that will not be allowed to be cleaned properly for another few weeks

Your hamster would get bigger also you will realize that she will be a little protective. Her abdomen will be of course bigger, and tighter, and often her nipples will become more visible. She will also eat more and a few days before giving birth, she will be carrying lots of bedding off to make a nest. Do NOT clean the cage!

If the hamster is making a nest and eating lots and lots of food and if the tummy is big, she might be pregnant.

You know when your hamster is pregnant when you see that is it gotten huge in a short amount of time. Her stomach will be bigger than you have ever seen it. They will also begin to make a giant nest in the corner of the cage. She will take most of the shavings in the cage to make the nest. She will hide her self completely in the nest. DO NOT touch the babies if she has them because this may cause abandonment of the babies.

How much does a dwarf bunny cost?

Find Yourself a BunnyThe best place to get any rabbit is from the breeder - the farmer who actually raised the rabbit and its parents. These people can be found in almost every town and village, but the best place to look is at a County Fair or youth agriculture show. There you may find rabbits for sale, or even for free, directly from the people who can help you give them a good home. Your veterinarian may know of a local rabbit breeder. Also check with the House Rabbit Society for animals that have been given up for adoption. Do not buy rabbits from pet stores - they often have undesirable congenital health issues that cannot be detected, and you cannot know what sort of animal farm you are supporting (and that could be really bad).

Unless you're looking to breed, or for guaranteed pure-bred, I suggest adopting your bunny from your local humane shelter. The bunny will be in good health and neutered if they're letting you adopt it. I got mine (a Netherlands dwarf) for $30.

What is a hamsters natural habitat?

Habitat

Hamsters' northern range extends from central Europe through Siberia, Mongolia, and northern China to Korea. The southern portion of their range stretches from Syria to Pakistan. Throughout dry, open country they inhabit desert borders, vegetated sand dunes, shrubby and rocky foothills and plateaus, river valleys, and mountain steppes; some live among cultivated crops. Geographic distribution varies greatly between species. The common hamster, for example, is found from central Europe to western Siberia and northwestern China, but the golden hamster has been found only near a small town in northwestern Syria.

If your teddy bear hamster just had her first litter of pups is there anything you need to do now?

Don't touch the babies. The mother will sense a smell that has never smelt before. Therefore, she thinks her babies are sick or contaminated, so she will eat the babies. Also, don't disturb the mother too much or she will go crazy!

Can you shower an albino Russian dwarf hamster?

'Albino Russian Dwarf hamster should be gently scrubbed with some hot water'

You should never shower a hamster in case it gets wet tali! Only 'bath' a hamster if it has something in its fur - but you use an old toothbrush and water to comb it out, but never shower it.

_____________________________________________________________

According to my exotic vet you should never bathe your hamster since they keep themselves very clean through self grooming and could actually die from getting wet. If there is a smell then clean the cage thoroughly and if there's still a smell then get it to an exotic vet in case your hamster has an infection. Mine had a small hole in her cheek from shoving too much stuff in her cheek pouch and it got infected (though it didn't smell) and I took her to my exotic vet. She needed antibiotics and she was fine once everything healed.

How do you treat a dwarf hamster with bites from another hamster?

Separate the hamsters. They do not live in groups in nature and only get together for a short time for mating. They are solitary animals and will continue to fight if they aren't separated. If antibiotics don't help, take them to the vet. Some infections can be below the skin where a topical antibiotic won't help. Only the vet can deal with this problem!
