Can a person receive text messages even though they cannot receive calls?

yes you actually can. You might not be connected to your phone service like rogers or telus. You still can text if you are connected to the internet though.
If you are not connected to your plan, they can't support you with texting, when you are connected to the internet, it should allow you to text anyone where your internet can bring you to.

No, only if you want to receive email or send/receive text messages or surf the internet. Some carriers require you to have a data plan as part of your contract though.

they receive and send messages to other cells/organelles. i don't think anything can pass through the nucleus though

All sms messages are handled though you network. If you use a messaging app it will normally go through WiFi.

unfortunately original iphones cannot send or receive picture texts but their is a website where you can veiw picture texts sent to your phone, though not sure what it is, or you can just get a new iPhone 3g or 3gs
