They are a substitute for the use of physical force, or other traditional non-lethal weapons as police batons (aka: 'billy clubs' or nightsticks), or blackjacks. Nowhere in their job description is it stated that law enforcement officers are required to go hands-on and physical with every arrestee who chooses to resist them, assault them, or who attempts to flee from arrest. However if I had the choice of being inappropriately shot with a sidearm, or my brains scrambled with a baton, I believe that I would opt for the momentary discomfort of a taser every time! He would grab his taser and stun them again if the 2 violent men try to attack them. The 2 vicious great danes against 3 German shepherds would have an equal chance of winning. A German shepherd is fiercer than a great dane, but the great dane is bigger and taller. If the violent men attacked the 3 German shepherds, they would lose no matter what. The police officer attacks the two great danes, and stuns them with the taser, and shoot them with his pistol. If the great danes attacked the officer first, the officer would still win, but get injured on the legs if he was not fast enough to use his taser or his pistol.
