A sentence has a subject and a verb. It is a complete thought and can stand on it's own.

A clause is not a complete thought. It is missing a subject or verb. It cannot stand on it's own.

Ex: What happened was, she fell on the steep hill.

the independent clause is she fell on the steep hill because it can stand alone without what happened was, which would be the dependant clause.

Yes a sentence can have more than one clause. Such as and independent and dependent clauses. A dependent clause cannot stand alone without an independent clause to support it. An independent clause can stand alone hence the names dependent and independent.

An independent clause can stand on its own.

Ex: She runs every morning.

But a subordinate clause cannot.

Ex: Since she is concerned about her health, she runs every morning.

In the above case, "Since she is concerned about her health" is the subordinate clause because it does not make sense without "she runs every morning."
