Can a smaller cat get sick and die from using advantage flea and tick treatment meant for larger cats but you don't use all of the application?

Yes! These spot on flea treatments are precisely measured to the proper dosages by the company that makes them. In other words, if you do not carefully dose the proper amount, you can very well make your cat sick and she could, in fact, die. If you notice any adverse symptoms after applying a flea treatment to your cat (vomiting, pale nose/gums, shaking, crying, lethargy, difficulty standing up, or ANYTHING out of the ordinary) call a vet right away.
If your vet instructed you to split the dosage package and you very carefully measure out the amount your vet told you with a syringe or medicine dropper, that could be okay. But eyeballing it yourself can have very bad consequences.
