Could be, low on coolant (a leak in the system), a stuck closed thermostat, a faulty temp gauge sending unit, a bad head gasket or cracked head (worst case scenario).

How do you tell when a car thermostat is bad?

Stuck open - no heat from heater, temp gauge hardly moves off of cold. Stuck closed - overheats engine, temp gauge quickly climbs to hot.

Why does the temp gauge read low when the motor is warm and the thermostat is open?

The thermostat is probably stuck open, even when the engine is cold.

Temp gauge will not hardly move up on your 92 ford explorer?

Your thermostat might be stuck open

What if your temp gauge climbs to fast on your Dodge Laramie What is the problem?

Check the serpentine belt or Thermostat stuck.

Could something be stuck open to cause a temp gauge not to register cause the fuses have been replaced and also could this cause the check engine light to come on?

Most likely, the temperature gauge's connection is loose. It is usually on the thermostat. An inoperative temperature gauge will cause most check engine lights to come on.

What would cause a 96 Ford F150 4.9 engine to run cool?

The thermostat is stuck open, 1) The thermostat could actually be one that is lower in temp (i.e. 185 deg instead of 192). 2) Temp gauge is inaccurate and shows to be cooler than is actually is.

How will you know if its your thermostat?

It depends on the symptoms. If you get poor heat from the heater and the temp gauge doesn't go up to normal, the thermostat may be stuck open. If the temp gauge reads hot quickly and the engine overheats, it may be a stuck closed thermostat. There could be many other reasons the engine is overheating and many are costly. Replacing the thermostat is a good place to start because the cost is minimal.

1997 F-150 Heater is blowing warm air not hot Would this be the thermostat or heater core Anti-freeze is full. Engine temp stays in the lower middle of the gauge.?

The thermostat is the most likely culprit. The major clue is that the engine temp stays in the lower middle of the gauge - the heater core would not cause this. The thermostat is most likely stuck in the open position - needs replacement.

Sending unit is new so why does water temp gauge not work on 99 marquis?

sounds like your temp switch is bad you will need to replace it. Maybe the thermostat is stuck open and the engine never heats up. <- even if the thermostat is stuck open the temp gauge would register heat it would just take longer for the engine to heat up for it to register.
