Yes, a tsunami can hit Hawaii. Hawaii is just located right in the open Pacific Ocean. About 68% of the world's earthquakes and 80% of the world's tsunamis occur there. Hawaii has been hit by many tsunamis in the past. Tsunamis occur most often along countries which border the Pacific "Rim of Fire", or "Ring of Fire'. One end of this region of high sesmic and volcanic activity begins at New Zealand, heading northwest to Indonesia (completely bypassing Australia) and then west to Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, northeast along the Asian coastline, east to North America and then south along the western North American coastline. Roughly horse-shoe shaped, the Ring of Fire extends about 40,000km long, and tsunamis can be generated anywhere along this rim. Hawaii lies right within this path, as witnessed by the volcanic activity on the islands.
Improved satellite imaging revealed that about 8-14% of the tsunami 'power' was directed in Hawai'i 's direction. However, not living in Hawaii, I've no idea what happened there. Only that some of the tsunami pressure went that way.
Any minute now. It was expected to hit an hour before you asked your question, but Mother Nature takes sher own time.
Yes, there were two famous and deadly tsunamis that affected Hawaii, particularly the city of Hilo.
One in 1946 and another in 1960.
No. It would have to be miles high.
The tsunami first reached kauai at 3:27 Hawaii time on march 11 , 2011
7.0Really a tsunami did not hit Hawaii they just had abnormally high waves hit the shores. The highest reported was 6 feet. And I don't know if they had much of any damage.
Saturday February 27, 2010. An 8.8 earthquake hit Chile and a Tsunami warning was issued for all of Hawaii. A series of smaller waves up to 6 feet travelled to the islands later in the day. With the early warning, everyone was safely evacuated to higher ground and damage was minimal.
The last tsunami to hit the US was in March 2011. The same tsunami that hit Japan also caused damage in Hawaii and along the U.S. West Coast. One person in California was killed.
Although large tsunami waves from Japan's earthquake hit Hawaii with some force, there are no reported fatalities as a result. There was one reported death in California, from an observer being swept out to sea by the tsunami wave.
