It will depend on the state that the veterinary facility is in and the exact nature of the relationship between the veterinary technician and the veterinary practice. Some states do not allow anyone but a veterinarian to open a veterinary practice. It may be possible, however, for a veterinary technician to own the facilities and employ the veterinary staff which they contract out to a veterinarian. In these situations, the veterinarian owns the practice (client records, makes all medical decisions, etc) and rents property and staff from the facility owner.

What can you do if your kitten has a broken or sprained leg and the animal hospital is closed right now?

Most Vet practices or Animal hospitals alway's have a vet on call for emergencies. When you call the number there is usually a message that tells you the particular Vet on call and provides you with the phone number to reach them, in case of emergencies. This is surpising to hear that your animal hospital is closed. However, if you have a kennel, or a box, make a soft bedding for your kitten along with some fresh water, and place kitty there until your vet office opens. Make sure your kitten is warm. Sometimes animals can go into shock from an injury. Do not let kitty walk around. Make sure you get your kitty in right away, when the animal hospital is open.

How To Determine if a Vet Tech Career is Suitable?

Few individuals decide when they are a child that pursuing a career as a vet tech is what matters to them most, but the field can be both very challenging and a perfect fit for the right person. Because the majority of educational programs that provide the training necessary to be a vet tech are up to two years in length, most prospective students want to know for sure if they are seriously interested in the prospect of a career in the field. By learning a little bit more about a vet tech position, individuals can make a better decision when it comes to enrollment time. A vet tech is obviously going to spend a great deal of their time with animals, but they also must be able to display compassion and deal effectively with consumers. Because there are high stress situations that are constantly involving a pet owner and their loved ones, a vet tech should be prepared to be calm under fire. The skills required of the actual job can be taught, but the necessary instincts are most likely going to have to be natural. A job as a vet tech often entails responding to potential emergencies at any time, day or night. However, most animal hospitals structure their scheduling to allow a person only to accept a certain amount of on call time each month. Weekend work may occasionally be required, and a vet tech will be needed to help care for the animals even when the hospital or office is not open for business. Any individual that is considering a career as a vet tech is going to be interested in what their future opportunities may be, and most of them involve some type of management position within an animal hospital or office. A vet tech can also be quite successful as a laboratory technologist or as a research assistant for a scientist. Other positions could exist outside of the immediate caring for animals. While the schooling may be a little longer than most people looking for a trade, a career as a vet tech could be an excellent opportunity for a person who would love to work with animals. Plenty of job openings exist and the future is bright for vet techs.

What is the purpose of the job vet tech?

Vet techs are essentially what nurses are for medical doctors. You assist the vet and perform some basic duties on your own. Overall, vet techs work to improve the quality of life of their animal patients and their owners.

What are the work environment hazards for a vet?

Vet's usually don't have to worry about hazards like Vet Techs do, because they simply are the ones who work on diagnosing a animal where as Vet Tech are the ones who take care of the animal while the Vet tries to figure out what's wrong with the animal, but they both have to deal with animals that could bite them or scratch them. There is always a risk of getting ring worm from an animal, if there is skin contact with the fungus. They both also have to work with slides to look at blood samples on them, and there is always a risk of dropping one. A Vet Tech or Vet could try picking this slide up, (and is probably broken, which is stupid to do so without a wet rag) and end up cutting themselves from the broken glass. Another hazard could be just working with the needles. If not used properly a Vet or Vet Tech can be poked by one, or become injured or even worse, become infected by the used needle.

What do you do if your pet is exposed to rabies?

If you think that there is a chance that your pet has made contact with a contaminated animal take them to a Vet.
