If you have been looking after yourself well (diet, exercise, monitoring your blood sugars) and the blood sugars are fairly stable there is no reason you can't become pregnant. However, you should talk openly with your doctor before getting pregnant as there are some risks while pregnant: There are many successful pregnancies, but according to the American Diabetes Assoc., pregnant diabetics with type 1 and II diabetes still have a higher rate of birth defects. The range of birth defects is 2 - 23% and is dependent on blood glucose levels during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy when the baby's organs are being formed. Gestational diabetes generally does not cause birth defects. However, just like type I and II diabetes, gestational diabets can result in a very large baby. While this may not sounds serious, it can cause considerable complications. The baby may become too large to be delivered vaginally and a cesarean section will be necessary. Low blood sugar may be an issue and the baby could need intravenous glucose and possibly a stay in intensive care. There is also a risk of the baby having a chemical imbalance such as low serum calcium and low serum magnesium levels. Please don't give up! If you speak to your doctor and work with your diabetic specialist there is no reason you couldn't become pregnant, but you must be informed of all information first. I have a friend whose daughter is diabetic and she has one little 2 1/2 year old and is onto her second pregnancy. She is working closely with her specialist and all is fine. Men with diabetes often have problems with sex. They can't maintain a erection and if they manage it is difficult to maintain. Women with diabetes don't seem to have too much of change re their sexual relationships. Here is a website I think you will like: www.diabeticmommy.com Good luck! Marcy

Yes. There are health risks associated with it, but it is possible. Answer Women with well controlled diabetes usually have no more difficulty getting pregnant than anyone else. The hormones of pregnancy can affect diabetic control so the woman must be looked after by both her ob/gyn and her diabetic specialist. Even without well controlled diabetes, it is possible to get pregnant, although there are more risks involved. More risks for birth defects and miscarriages and still births. It is extremely important to work with your Drs to make sure you and your baby are as healthy as possible.
