Yes, and it's quite common to see one used as such. Whenever the voltage exceeds the rating of the diode, the diode will conduct and usually short circuit the excess voltage to ground. It's been commonly called a `crowbar circuit' and using the diode, it can be configured in several different configurations, depending on your application.

A zener designed for such applications is often called a TVSS or avalanche diode. These feature lower incremental resistance, faster response times, lower leakage currents, and smaller capacitance as compared to conventional zener diodes.

Downside of a zener diode is its tiny power handling abilities. Similar function is also performed using a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) for DC or a thyristor (triac) for AC.

When a 3.3 V zener diode is parallel with a 7 V zener diode what is the break down voltage?

Since they are in parallel, the 3.3V zener diode will "kick in" first when you reach 3.3V, and the circuit will pretty much act the same as if the 7V zener diode isn't there at all.

What is the function of zener dioed?

The function of a zener diode is for it to act as a voltage regulator in the breakdown region.

How do you xxplain the zener shunt regulator?

zener diode is a special type of pn junction diode that work in breakdown region . There are two types of brekdowns in zener i.e avlanche breakdown and zener breakdown depending on the doping concentration. A zener diode in an on state can be considered as a voltage source ,equal to its zener voltage n hence act as an voltage regulator

How much voltage appears across a zener diode when it is forward-biased?

That depends on the zener voltage rating:"low voltage" zeners are just a simple single diode, the zener diode"high voltage" zeners contain 2 back to back diodes in one package, the zener diode and an ordinary diode that is reverse biased when the zener diode is forward biased to block forward conduction of the zener and protect it from overcurrent damage if installed backwards by mistakeThus in "low voltage" zeners when forward biased they will have a normal diode drop (e.g. 0.7V), but "high voltage" zeners when "forward biased" they will act open due to the reverse biased blocking/protection diode in series with the zener.

Is it really nessecary to replace a surge protector after a lightening strike?

If your surge protector is still supplying power, it should still be fine. Surge protectors have two separate ways of preventing surges, semiconductors act as variable resistors to prevent smaller surges (which can be cause by things as simple as refrigerators and air conditioners, anything high voltage), and a fuse that breaks to protect from surges the semiconductors cannot handle. If the surge protector is still supplying power, the fuse is still intact, and your surge protector is fine.

What is Zener diode function?

Zener diodes are widely used as voltage references and as shunt regulators to regulate the voltage across small circuits. When connected in parallel with a variable voltage source so that it is reverse biased, aZener diode conducts when the voltage reaches the diode's reverse breakdown voltage.

Why diode act as an insulator?

Diode is a semiconductor material. so it act as insulator also.
