Kennedy Engineered Products sells an adapter kit that will hang the engine on the transaxle, but you need to go to http://www.aircooledtechnology.com and send a message to Jake Raby before you try this. Jake Raby knows more about putting Type 4 engines in Bugs than anyone else around. Use his experience.

The type I Beetle engine was used in the VW bus (with slight mods) from 1950 to 1971. In 1972, the bus received the new type IV engine, although certain counrties continued to use the type I Beetle motor. So yes. Check your flywheel to ensure it is the correct one.

What is a transaxle?

First, a brief presentation. A motor (or engine, if you prefer) drives a transmission (different "gears" or drive ratios) which drives some kind of differential to drive the axles (which drive the wheels) of a vehicle. The transaxle combines the functions of the transmission and differential to deliver the engine power to spin the axles. There are a lot of different transaxles, as you can imagine. The VW's from back in the day used them. So did (and do!) a lot of race cars. Use the link for pictures. There are a bunch of them. Not all are automotive, which is good because the transaxle isn't just limited to vehicles, though most of our encounters with transaxles are in cars.

When was the vw beetle made?

You never replace a piston without replacing the cylinder too, as they're a matched set. The ones you want are for the 1600 cc engine.

Will 1978 vw bus case fit 1966 vw bug?

Engine case? The engine for the 78 bus is what is referred to as the Type 4 engine, which is vastly different from the Type 1 engine case used stock in the 1966 bug.It would require a lot of fabrication to fit this Type 4 engine in a Type 1 Beetle, but it has been done.
