No, only people with licenses to have stock animals may slaughter them for food. If you were trapped without food and only had your horse, nobody would blame you for doing it in that situation, but otherwise no.

What are the benefits of horse slaughter?

There are no benefits to any kind of horse slaughter. Americans won't eat horse meat but a lot of American horses are slaughtered for the meat market in parts of Europe. As a horse owner and lover my whole life I can't imagine how anyone could support such practices. There is another kind of horse slaughter that happens everyday in the United States. It's the slaughter of our wild mustangs by ranchers and so called sportsmem. Our own mustangs are being killed because they infringe on ranchers territories (mostly Federal land) for grazing. Others are killed for sport. These horses are a part of our heritage and should be treated with respect and dignity.

It is illegal to sell or consume horse meat, but it is not illegal to slaughter horses for other purposes additionally 100,000 horses are exported from the United States under horrific conditions to be brutally slaughtered in Mexico and Canada each year. The last three slaughter plants were shut down due to local laws and code violations. There are currently applications in several states that have companies looking to open horse slaughter plants. The most recent is being attempted by a faux rescue group and the WY Senator Sue Wallis - known by the rescue community as \"Slaughterhouse Sue\".The most recent application that failed was in April of 2010 and Willie Nelson and is daughter were critics of the idea and with their help, the bill/application was defeated.Actually, slaughter was stopped because the Federal Government defunded USDA inspections for slaughteredhorses. Sadly, the plight of horses sent to Mexico for slaughter is even worse than it was in the USA. It is illegal to sell horse meat for human consumption, It is not illegal to eat horse meat if a horse owner/cares to consume their own animals.
