Migraine is not well understood, although we are learning more and more about the genetics, pathophysiology and epidemiology of Migraine every day. Migraine is a diagnosis of exclusion - we cannot test FOR it, but try to rule out other disorders/diseases before diagnosing Migraine. There exist now some tests to help determine if someone carries the genetic capacity for certain types of Migraine, but this too is incomplete. Currently the Mayo hospital is doing research to help us find more genes associated with Migraine that will help us devise tests for Migraine instead of simply ruling everything else out. For appropriate diagnosis and treatment of headache disorder and disease, please seek the help of a board certified headache specialist.
