That depends on the judge. Normally in the US the mother is given custody. Although there is a trend of joint custody. It's no different than being married to a US citizen. My sister was married to Canadian and she was given full custody. It is always best to work out the arraingment with the ex.
Being married or unmarried is not much of a determining factor when it comes to custody nowadays. In order to have custody changed you would need to prove that either your household and parenting abilities are substantially better than the other parent, or that their situation is detrimental to the children. Having a spouse does not necessarily mean that you are better able to care for the children, especially if the other parent has had custody for a significant length of time without the children having any problems in a single parent household.

He should prepare in the same way he would if the parents had been married. Not being married does not change your rights to your child, but remember to try and be reasonable and work out an arrangement that's best for your child and gives him/her as equal of time with each parent as possible
It is generally recommended to have temporary custody papers in place when moving with a child to a different state to ensure legal compliance and avoid potential issues. This can help demonstrate consent from both parents or legal guardians and avoid complications during the move. Consulting with a family law attorney would be beneficial in understanding the specific requirements in your situation.
Not being secure with yourself.
If he has been to court to prove paternity so he can get his parental rights then, yes he can petition for it. He can also petition for visitation and pay child support. Custody, shared or not, is one of the parental rights biological parents have. One parent being married to someone else will not matter unless the spouse is not suitable around kids (since they live together).
To have the responsibility of being the guardian for children. Also means to have placed someone under arrest for some crime.

If the parents are married, than no, but if the are not married, the mother has sole and exclusive custody, than yes. In that case, the father will need to file for his rights, and an emergency injunction, if there's a concern the child is being relocated.see related link
