yes, hernias are from a defect in the facia(a tough layer of tissue), a hard cough could create a larger defect. A serious problem with a hernia is from the bowel pushing through the fascia and becoming trapped, this is called an incarcerated bowel--which requires surgical intervention, if you develope a protrution lying down on your back and relaxing can sometimes reduce it, don't strain yourself!----- that cough reproduces same downforce push that might have caused it.

If they are groin ("inguinal") hernias then: If your job is mainly sedentary (sitting) then you should be fine, unless you have a sudden increase in pain combined with vomiting and constipation (which is a medical emergency, so you should immediately go to hospital if this happens). If your job involves lifting things or carrying heavy loads (even just bar or waitering work which means carrying more than 1kg/2lbs) then no - that will make the hernias worse. The risk is that you could have bit of bowel catch in the hernia and it could obstruct (leading to lots of pain and vomiting, as i mentioned before). If you do a lot of lifting/carrying generally, cough a lot (like if you're a smoker) or you suffer from constipation, see a surgeon and get your hernias repaired - don't live with them - as they WILL get worse, more painful and more dangerous. Some hernias can get a loop of intestine stuck in them and the blood supply can get cut off from it which is a medical emergency. Obviously, no one wants that to happen, so the best thing to do is get examined early on while it's not a problem and see if it needs to be fixed.
