Yes, electricity can be generated (directly) from sound energy. The process, however, can't be "scaled up" for power generation. But for other applications, it is superb. Electricity can be generated directly from sound energy by piezoelectric effect. The way it works is that the mechanical energy of sound is applied directly to a crystal (or possibly a ceramic) with strong piezoelectric characteristics, and the crystal will generate a small amount of voltage in response to the application of that mechanical energy (sound). What we are doing is "squeezing" the crystal. A squeeze will generate a small voltage for the duration of the squeeze. When the crystal is released, another small voltage will be generated in the opposite polarity. We use the idea all the time when we use ultrasound in medical and other imaging. The military units of the Navy use it widely in sonar applications, and there are broadly demonstrated uses of marine sonar as can be seen on many video productions of marine exploration, discovery and salvage operations. As stated, the piezoelectric conversion of mechanical energy (sound) directly to electricity is something we can only do on a small scale. But it is exceptionally useful that we can apply the technology to imaging and testing as well as to the marine sonar applications that we have come to know. A link to an article on piezoelectric effect is provided. The article is posted by our friends at Wikipedia, where knowledge is free.

What electricity is generated using water?

Hydropower is generated using water. It harnesses the energy of flowing or falling water to produce electricity. This is done by capturing the kinetic energy of the water and converting it into mechanical energy, which is then used to spin turbines connected to generators, producing electricity.

What are some examples of things that produce electricity?

Most electricity is generated using coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear energy, or hydropower. Some production is done with alternative fuels like geothermal energy, wind power, biomass, solar energy, or fuel cells. The electricity you buy may be generated using one or more of these methods. No matter what fuels produce the electricity you use, your lights shine, your radio plays, and your computer runs in the same way.

Can sound generate power?

Sound is vibration in air, so it contains energy. It is possible to make those vibrations in energy do work, and turn them into power, in the same way as some have proposed generating electricity from waves in the ocean. Generating electricity from sound is currently impractical. Microphones can be thought of as devices which turn sound into power-- the sound vibrates a thin piece of metal, which changes the electric signal passing through the microphone. It doesn't generate electricity, but work is done when the sound pushes the metal back and forth. Another example of work being done by sound is when if high-pitched sound breaks a crystal glass.

How much energy in the world is generated by tidal energy?

Realistically none of the worlds energy needs are done in this manner.

What type of energy is static electricity?

static energy is basically positive and positive going together to form a static shock this can also be done with negatives

What is hdroeletricity?

Hydroelectric power is generated by water passing through the blades of a turbine to generate electricity. Typically this is done at a waterfall or dam.

Can you generate electricity by gravitational energy?

Sure, it is commonly done, in hydroelectric plants. The energy from the falling water is converted into electricity. Please note that it takes energy to get the water up again. This occurs in nature due to the Sun's energy.Sure, it is commonly done, in hydroelectric plants. The energy from the falling water is converted into electricity. What is an example of the physics definition of power?

Power is the rate of work done or rate of energy generated or expended

How can the loudness of a sound decrease?

Loudness is a person's perception of the intensity of a sound wave. A sound wave can be generated by any object able to impart energy to the environment, such as a set of speakers, clapping hands or a laser pulse through the air. Decreasing loudness can be done by removing energy from the sound wave. Generally this is done by adding a dampening material (like foam) in between you and the source of the sound. However, one can also remove the medium over which sound travels (i.e. remove the air and create a vacuum). An extremely loud and powerful sound source on earth would be inaudible on the moon

Is a microphone a converter of sound energy to electrical energy and why?

Yes the microphone converts sound waves/vibrations into electrical energy/signals. This is done so that the sound can be recorded for storage and playback or transmitted to some distant location (the the sound could not reach).

How do electrical companies store electricity?

They don't. Power is always being used somewhere, and the electrical systems are connected all over the country.AnswerThere is no direct means of storing electrical energy, Energy companies generate energy to meet the demand placed on it by the load being supplied. If the load goes up, then more energy is generated to meet that load; if the load goes down, then less energy is generated. The energy generated does not exceed the load.Energy can be stored indirectly. For example, hydroelectric power systems rely on the water stored behind dams in order to generate electrical energy so, in that sense, energy is indeed being stored.

What energy source can be used to pump water?

Any energy source that generates electricity can be used to run an electricity pump for water. Without electricity, wind power, like a windmill, can be used to pump water, as it has done since the time of the Romans.
