Yes they can, so long as the message contains only those things which will be uplifting to the Missionary. Remember they are called to bring people to Christ, they cannot do this if the message received causes them to detract from their purpose.

Are you allowed to go to a church with lds missionaries you already know?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Hopefully this is a satisfactory answer: If LDS Missionaries invite you to church, then of course you can go. Nobody is turned away from LDS worship services. Most missionaries are also able to attend services of different denominations when invited. If you live in the area where the missionaries are serving, you can attend the congregation they are serving in, regardless of whether or not you know the missionaries there. The Church strongly requests that family members and friends do not visit missionaries while they are serving unless they have made prior arrangements with the Mission President. If you are a relative or friend from home, you should not attend the congregation where your missionary is serving unless you have recieved permission from the Mission President, it is much to distracting to the missionaries to recieve surprise visits from home. In short, if you knew the missionary prior to them becoming a missionary, check with them or with the Mission President before visiting their congregation.

What is the ration of men to women lds missionaries?

The exact ratio between men and women in the LDS missionary force is constantly changing, as missionaries leave and come home every week. However, generally, about 10% -20% of Mormon missionaries are women. The number of female LDS missionaries is expected to rise quite dramatically over the next several months as the minimum age requirement was lowered from 21 to 19, (as of October 2012) making a mission more accessible for many young women.

Can close friends email LDS missionaries?

Yes they can, so long as the friend remembers that the Missionary has a special assignment and all correspondence should be kept to a minimum in content. Remarks as to how they are keeping, and interesting facts regarding their friends and family which will not cause any unnecessary worry to the missionary should be kept in mind. Try and keep all worldly events out of your letters, but write about good wholesome things.

Do missionaries have to return home immediately after completing their mission overseas or can they visit or contact friends they have made in that country first?

This depends on the denomination. If you are referring to LDS (Mormon) missionaries, usually the answer is yes. You will have to work this out with your mission president, but generally if you are serving overseas you can be released as a missionary by your mission president and then spend time sightseeing or visiting friends. This has to be done with your own money, of course. Once you are released from your mission the Church will no longer fund your travel expenses. It is increasingly common, however, for mission presidents to not allow this, as technically your home Stake or District President should be the one to release you from your mission.
