The check engine light actually means there might be something wrong with your emissions system (nothing to do with your engine, unless you are burning huge amounts of oil). Even then, it's most often caused by simply not tightening up your gas cap at least 3 or 4 clicks.
Go fill your gas tank, close the cap really tight, and it will probably repressurize and that light will go out by the time the tank is empty again.
