archaea
Lichen is a composite organism consisting of algae and/or cyanobacteria and fungal filaments existing symbiotically. Its place in the grand scheme of things is probably not something it ponders. It likely doesn't ponder much at all, in fact. It can be found across the globe, in some of the most extreme environments on Earth, and consists of a great many varieties and component species. If it should be attributed a purpose, much like any form of life, it would be to survive and thrive. It achieves this admirably.

The suitable temperature range for the development of life on earth is different from the suitable range once life has developed. Once life has a strong foothold, evolution allows life to adapt to both increasing and decreasing temperatures, until it is able to survive in extreme environments at both ends of the scale.
Conditions on some parts of Mars are very similar to conditions in extreme environments on earth, where life is found. Since life is found there, there is a possibility it might also be found on Mars.

The extremophiles refers to the organisms that thrive geochemically or physically in the extreme conditions that are detrimental to most life on the earth. The organisms that live in the moderate environments are called the neutrophils or the mesophylls.
They live in extream enviorments like at the bottom of the ocean.
While there are organisms that can live for long periods of time and organisms that can survive extreme conditions, there is no organism that is immortal. Unless God counts.
