It depends what kind of a relationship you're in. Your parents love you, but, it's not all the time that they're nice to you, in alot of cases, but that doesn't mean they don't love you. Whatever your parents do, they will always love you. Love and cruelty often centuries ago, it's rarely a problem nowadays. Men used to gain dominance over women, even in the 16th and 17th century, it was only until the Suffragettes came in that women were even able to vote for elections. Archaeologists have discovered an ancient tablet depicting a caveman dragging his wife by her hair to the cave, even then, you see men had dominance - proof about cavemen existing aside. Men, centuries, even millenia ago, often beat their wives or girlfriends, then again, this still happens - on very few occasions - today. Homes are being made for wives and girlfriends to stay and be looked after after being beaten by their husbands or boyfriends. Love and cruelty was more common a long time ago, but, yes, it still happens now.

Probably with the first interaction between humans and non humans. When a cat plays with a mouse I doubt that it is cruelty because cats don't have the abstract understanding that humans have. when a human does the same sort of thing and they do then it is cruelty because they do understand.

You do not owe the other person anything and either remain true to the person you are going with or breakup and date the person that told you they love you if you have the same feelings for them.

I definitely think that it's possible to love someone and not be in love. I go through the same problem. It all depends on the relationship you had with the person. You might just miss that relationship you two had and you just miss having that in your life, not necessarily the person.
