Depending on the laws of the state you are employed in,medical, dental, optical and pharmacy benefits may be provided to workers and their same-sex spouses. However, the value of the spousal coverage is subject to federal income tax. States that do not recognize same-sex marriage also charge state income tax on that benefit, as does New York, unless the spouse is the legal dependent of the worker.
