shift linkage is worn out
Reply, Not necessarily.
Remove the console ring around the shifter then the shifter boot. There are two cables that run from the shifter to the transmission which pass through a plastic bulkhead. On the rearward side of the bulkhead are clips which hold the cables in place. Chances are the clip on the right(passenger side) cable is missing.
If automatic.... pull the emergency beak and put the shift on N for neutral... If 5 or 6 speed... there should be a picture showing you 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, reverse and neutral..............
You can put an engine, from your Toyota Celica, into your Toyota Corolla. The wiring harness and the motor mounts will need to be changed.
if your going over 2nd gear the gearbox will surely fall out
Clutch may need adjustment and it may not be fully dropping the plate. Possibly the dogs on the synchros are mashed up. Put it in second gear and then try sliding it into reverse.
thats stupid of course not
I have same problem.

Begin by removing the valve cover retaining bolts. Remove the old belt cover gasket and clean the surface. Put the new valve cover gasket on and reverse the process.
