Working the rectifier
Rectifiers will not give a smooth DC voltage. There are ripples in the voltage given the rectifier. So in order to smoothen the voltage we use capacitor in parallel to the rectifier output. Now lets see how the capacitor smoothen the voltage that is coming from a rectifier...... Capacitor blocks DC and allows AC...... If we take the voltage that is coming from the rectifier it has some ripples in addition to DC, these ripples can be divided in to sinusoidal wave forms ( fictitious )according to the Fourier series. So the rippled DC now divided ( fictitious ) in to a pure DC and sinusoidal AC wave forms having the frequency that is multiples of ripple frequency. Now the DC current will not pass through the capacitor as the capacitor blocks DC. But the AC will pass through it i.e the ripple wave forms that are divided ( fictitious ) in to sinusoidal AC wave forms will pass through the capacitor. So only DC current enters in to the load, which will produce a pure DC voltage drop across the load. In this manner the capacitor smoothens the voltage.
Due to the type of motor used in a fan. The capacitor provides a phase shift between the stationary winding and the rotating winding, which is necessary to get the desired torque.
in a ceiling fan the capacitor is used to give the starting torque to motor for run. because we need a rotating type of magnetic field to the motor to run. once the motor run it become running even we disconnect the capacitor. by using the capacitor we produce the electrica difference(phase angle) between the two current taking by capacitor and the motor winding.

The capacitor in a ceiling fan is a small fuse like device which helps the fan to slow down or rotate faster. It is normally inserted into the ceiling unit of fan just about the fins.

We use capacitor on fan motor or blower to create phase difference between two winding(Starting & running). This phase difference introduce starting torque on fan motor. Otherwise without capacitor the torque produced in positive Half cycle of AC supply is nullify by the torque produced in negative half cycle.
Polar capacitor used in those places where the voltage will never switch polarity on them under proper use conditions. Their high capacitance means they can be used more effectively for power supply filtering, reducing ripple in a rectifier, and softening on/off switching.
