Can rottweilers be good pets for children?

No. They are aggressive dogs and large. They are more likely to scare young children and their friends. Not suitable as family pets. Go for something smaller, less powereful and domesticated.

Yes they can be good with children if u get a puppy and bring him up around your kids.

Disagree strongly Ben what happens when your kids friends come around and the dog doesnt know them. They are used as guard dogs specifically for their size,power and aggression to strangers. Friends of mine had to put theirs down for that very reason. You may be happy to endanger your kids and their friends but please do not pretend to others that Rottweilers are suitable family dogs as pets for children.

As with all dogs, it is how you bring them up. A well trained and socialised Rottweiler, rarely pose any problems. Lack of experience with large breed dogs and bad ownership of this particular breed, is what causes out of control dogs. Irresponsible owners let their dogs run freely around the community, they are the ones that give this breed a bad name.

However, most rescue centers do not recommend this breed to families with children under the age of 7 years, as they are still at the age where they can irritate a dog, by messing when they are eating, and just generally grabbing at them. Bringing a pup into a family is different, just make sure they are well supervised, and start socialising from day one..

I have kept Dobermans and German Shepherds besides Rottweilers and I have never had a problem, when it comes to children visiting. So you see, when purchasing a breed like these, you have to start as you mean to go on.

I have a female rott and shes very loveable i got her when she was over 1year old and i have 5 kids 2yr ,4yr,9yr,11yr,12yr olds and they love her and she loves them my 2yr old goes crazy over her ,he always tries to give her his food and his toys ,every time i feed her i pet her on her head and side of her face this is not a good idea for all dogs it depends on how the owner treats the dog and on the dog i pet her because to let her know we are not going to take her food and for her not to be so aggresive near my kids when she eats they sit next to her and pet her while she eats i always watch them to be on the save side ,i trust my dog and my kids friends come over with no problem .You have to bring the dog near people and other dogs .I tell my dog shes a good girl and pretty girl ,i pet her every day to show her love for her not to be aggresive.When you trian them you have to becarfull and ferm but not mean or aggresiveness towards them.rott get easily distracted it takes awhile and consistency for them to get what you want them to do .yes you can have them in a family as long as you show love and train them to be around people its all on the owner of the dog ,when you get a dog and you dont know how its been treated by the old owner i would becarefull near kids and your self

I have a 2 year old rottie named Frank. He is excellent with children of all ages. I have never had a problem. I keep a careful eye on him just to be safe since he is so large (about 100 lbs) and kids can be cruel. Overall Frank is a wonderful ambassador for Rotties everywhere! Before getting one (if it isn't a puppy) I suggest taking your kids with you on a meet and greet. After of course you test him yourself with typical child like behavior (tail pulling, touching their paws etc.). There are usually temperament testers on hand for this if you are uncomfortable.
