If you are a selfish person, you must first realize the ways in which you are selfish, and you must want to change. From there, you would need some sort of spiritual or other form of awakening. You could then start making small steps in being less selfish. You could try being generous.

From there, you would need to examine your basic attitudes about life. Here are some attitudes to eliminate since it is hard to overcome selfishness with them:

• "It is a dog eat dog world."
• "There are the haves and the have-nots." That just gives some permission to take.
  
• "I can't say no." Ironically, a compulsion to give may make you less willing to give.
  
• Having a paradigm of lack. You cannot be generous and feel you lack what you need.
• Being generous to please others.
  

Keep in mind that being unselfish doesn't mean indiscriminate giving. Enabling others to be selfish is not a good way to overcome your own selfishness. With time, that could contribute to resentment and it may thwart your efforts to change.

Remember also that any habit takes at least 30 consecutive days of continuous effort to change. So you would have to make the effort to overcome selfish behaviors for a minimum of 30 days before you start automatically behaving more as you desire.
