Yes, that is what it is for.
Depending on the error, it could either mean that someone posted before you got a chance to, or possibly, the message board could have been protected. If you get a yellow message, and there is no box to type, then it means that the message board was protected. If you are able to click the post button, but then it pops up a screen asking you to edit the board, then it means that someone posted before you.

When someone "bumps" a post, such as on a message board, it means they post a meaningless reply to a message. This usually has the effect of elevating a message to the top of those displayed, which are often sorted according to most recent activity.
To keep people from seeing the messages on your Pin Board on Moshi Monsters, when someone sends you a message, you can choose to delete it instead of approving it. If you post a message to someone else's Pin Board, the only way to keep other people from seeing it is to ask that person to delete the message from their Pin Board. Or just don't post any messages at all. Keep in mind that Moshi Monsters staff monitor messages, so if you post any message that is against their rules, it will most likely be seen by a staff member before it gets posted anywhere.
If you are on a message board, and someone posts a topic, then more people post on that topic.. That is a thread.
To chat with someone on Moshi Monsters, go to your pin board near where your door is. Click on it and where it says "add a message", click and then write the message and then post it to your board. If your friend messages you, click reply, then click post.

Yes, you can put a message on anyone else's message board. Just keep in mind the message boards are not private, so don't post anything you wouldn't want others to read, or profanity of any kind. Also, don't post private info about yourself or others, such as addresses, phone numbers, etc.
