After a couple of days, check the marks on the bucket and the pool. They should measure the same (having lost the same amount of water due to evaporation). If the pool level has dropped more than the level of water in the bucket, you have a leak somewhere. (By the way, make sure your dog hasn't drank out of the bucket, or pool!)

If you want to know if your pool leaks. # Take a bucket of water from the pool. # mark the water level of the pool. # mark the water level in the bucket. # check to see how much the water has gone down after a couple of days in the pool and n the bucket. # If the level in the bucket is closer to the mark then the level in the pool there is water being lost some where. If there is no difference then there is no leak. The surface water on the bucket evaporates at the same rate as that on the pool, so the should stay the same.

When do you add stabilizer to the pool?
Stabilizer is used to protect Chlorine from the UV rays of the sun. If chlorine is not protected from the sun, all the shock you added yesterday will be gone by lunchtime today. A normal stabizer level is around 40ppm (parts per million) if you get above 100 ppm your pool water can lock up and chemicals will become inactive. Also note: if your level becomes too high the only way to lower it is to exchange water in the pool. If you use a stabilized chlorine, it will, over time increase your stabilizer level in the pool. So be careful not to over stabilize. It is better to error on the side of under stabilize the to over stabilize. Stabilizer is also known as Cyanuric Acid

The BEST way to simply determine whether the pool has a leak is called the 'bucket test'. 1) Partially fill a bucket with the pool water and mark or measure the water level in the bucket. 2) mark or measure the water level in the pool(does not have to be the same level as water in bucket) 3)Place the bucket on the top step of the pool and leave for 24 hours (or for as long as you like, but sufficiently long to see a change in water level due to evaporation). The fall in the two water levels, pool and bucket, should be exactly the same (eg: 0.5" drop in pool waterlevel and 0.5" drop in bucket water level). If the water level in the pool has fallen further than has the water level in the bucket, the pool has a leak.
