If your scores are high enough on the ASVAB you may be offered a guaranteed school. Talk to your recruiter but take along a friend who is savvy. Navy recruiters do not work for you, they work for the Navy--you are nothing more to them than a number and they will promise you the world to get you to sign. That's just the way they roll.
If one doesn't do well on the mechanic part of the ASVAB test can he still get into the navy?
Yes, if your overall score is above a 35.

You can take it 1 month after you first took it.
How can you practice for the asvab?
When you see a recruiter they will ask if you've taken the asvab if you say no they will give you a shortened version of the asvab, I think it was 50 questions total. The only addition I have to this answer is that the shortened version is called the Enlistment Screening Test (EST). I have taken it, at the Navy Office. It doesn't count as your score, it just gives them an idea of where your ASVAB score would be for tween they talk possible career interests, and what you realistically can and can't qualify for when you take the actual ASVAB
