Can the fact that you still get a type of bleeding be the reason the hcg levels do not show on a blood test for pregnancy?

No, having a period, or other type of bleeding does not affect
the results of a blood pregnancy test. ~pawsalmighty Yes it does
affect it because there is not enough progestrone to stop the
"period". Having a period equals have a negative tests. Eventually
this period should stop if not, you have to get an ultrasound.

Can you take a pregnancy test during a period?

Whoever told you "no" is wrong. Pregnancy test detect the HCG in
your urine or blood ( if you go to the doctors to have a blood test
performed ) and it will only detect that hormone. Nothing else will
affect it. That's what they're made for detecting. It does not
matter if one is on their period or not. As a matter of fact, you
could be on your period, and take a pregnancy test ( wait until a
week after you have missed your period to take one ) and it will
still be accurate.

Can blood in your urine from your period affect a home pregnancy test?

No. Why would you be taking a pregnancy test if you're
menstruating? If you're on your period, then obviously you
are not pregnant. The whole point of a pregnancy test is if you've
missed your period, not while you're on it.
However, you can sometimes have a period through your pregnancy.
Quite a few women do.
