Could be the speed sensor or another common problem with neons is broken solder points on the instrument cluster circuit board. To test it, see if your cruise control can keep you at speed. are you refering to the on in the rear diff?unbolt the little steel bracket remove the diff vent.now it it unbolted.carefully pry up a little spray some penetrating oil on it there is an oring that seals the sensor in.that also makes it tough to remove.twist and pry it up.if it breaks screw down into the sensor and keep pulling.if it wont come out time to service the diff.remove the cover and pop the sensor up.becareful not to bend any teeth on the tone wheel.reseal the cover refill the diff and replace the sensor.your speedo should work again.

On some vehicles you can get around the speed sensor and the stability issue can be minimized by rim ofset & tire width to some extent but stability could be a safety problem. Check your clearance between the tires & the inner wheel wells also as well as clearance with other parts.

These vehicles do not have speedometer cables. There is an Output Speed Sensor mounted on the transmission. That sends electronic data to the powertrain control module PCM and the body control module BCM. The PCM uses the speed data to coordinate shifting. The BCM uses the data to drive the speedometer. Unscrew the cable, pull the elec plug, take out the 10mm bolt, pull the sensor. Replace is opposite.

It doesn't. A speedo only measures the speed you're travelling at, at that particular moment. But you can get distance, if you stay at an even speed, and keep track of how long you've been going. Speed x time = distance. One hour at 50 MPH means 50 miles travelled. 1/2 hour at 50 MPH means 25 miles travelled.
