That year did not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain and gears. If the timing chain broke then yes . It will just quit running and will not start.
You need to check the fuel pressure FIRST and then make sure the engine is firing next. I don't think the timing chain went out. it is not a common problem with that year. It would help if WE new the engine size too. I would check things out real close before putting a timing chain in it. There is a lot of things that could just shut the engine off with out the check engine light coming on.
0 degrees
The timing on that year engine is computer controlled. It requires an engine scanner to set the timing. YOU CAN NOT USE A TIMING LIGHT.
It has a timing chain that should last the life of the engine.
It does not have a timing belt. It has a timing chain which is normally good for the life of the engine.
It does not HAVE a timing belt. It has a timing chain and it will most likey last the life of the engine.
That requires a OBDII engine scanner. You can not use a timing light. The timing is computer controlled.
The timing is set on a 98 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.7L by aligning the cam sprocket with the timing chain markings. The engine's computer will then make adjustments on the fly for any additional timing changes needed.
Front of engine behind timing cover
It is behind the timing cover on the front of the engine. You will have to remove the timing cover to get to it.
It has a chain and gears. NO BELT. There would be no reason to fool with the timing chain and gears on that year engine. The chain and gears would out last the engine.
Never, it is designed to last the life of the engine and is normally replaced when the engine is overhauled.
Never, normally it will last the life of the engine.
