In short, yes, they can. BUT, and this is a BIG but, some very stringent and specific regulations apply.
Here is a basic summery:
1. A medical waiver is needed since Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is considered a disqualifying condition. Most trans-men will also need a weiver for being under the required weight or height required for military entrance.
2. Must be pre-op (this means no mastectomy or sexual reassignment has been done, at entrance)
3. No Hormones (history of is okay but levels must be normal at entrance)
4. Must pass the physical exam like everyone else
I don't think so.
Answer:
Yes. A person who is transgendered is just as competent, patriotic and tough as any 'normal' person and can serve with honor or dishonor. And people in the military have had gender reassignment surgery and continued to serve.
If some one is biologically Trans-Gender- or Hermaphrodite- my guess- and all recruits must have physicals- they would be singled out by Medical officers and promptly discharged. The possibility of using Trans-Gender personnel as spies- well I don"t know. Look at it- There are AirMEN and Women in the AF, same with the other services ( WAVES, WACS, etc) The Brass doesn"t want any more of a Gay problem than they already have ( Don"t ask, Don"t Tell) I would advise against it.
