Can two people who admittedly love each other survive a break-up to break a cycle of bad habits and eventually come back together?

We just ignored the problems... well, didn't ignore them. Just didn't fix them. Took each other for granted a bit. Wanted to believe things would get better on their own, but they never did. Until we got to the breaking point, where the only way to break the cycle was to break up. Very foolish... agreed we wished we could have seen this earlier. The conversation was very open, both of us knew it was the only way to break the cycle, though neither of us "wanted" to break up. But even at the end of the conversation and all throughout, we talked about how we had wanted to get married (but can't if those problems will occur in the future), and how much we love each other. I mean, we said "I love you to one another" just before we walked away from each other. I just don't know what to think. Answer
The first thing you should have done was talk openly about why you had to break up, then chang the things that got you there in the first place and then do something about it together. One person can't solve the problems that two people are experiencing. If your love is strong as you suggest in your question why didn't the two of you do something together to avoid the break up in the first place.
