Using magnetism we can separate iron fillings from saw dust.
1. Set it on fire and burn the sawdust away

2. throw it in some water and the iron will sink

3. use a magnet to attract out the iron from the wood

4. sit there and carefully pick it apart using a toothpick

5. gently blow on it so the wind will blow the sawdust away but not the iron

How do you separate a mixture of sand salt chalk dust and amp iron filings.?

First remove iron filings with a magnet. That leaves sand, salt and chalk dust. Add water which dissolves the salt, and filter leaving the sand and chalk dust on the filter paper. Put that back in water and add acid to dissolve the chalk dust (CaCO3) leaving the sand as a solid. Filter to obtain the sand. The chalk dust will now be in the acid as CO2 and H2O and the Ca salt of the acid.

What can you infer about the strength of a magnetic field based upon the position of the iron filings?

The profile of the iron filings reflects that of the magnetic field. When the magnetic field is strong, the lines will be really tight (small separation) and thick (height and width). =========================

How do you find the shape of a magnetic field using a compass?

Yes. I can be done using iron filings and a clear piece of plastic. Pour on the iron filings, put on the plastic, and then the magnet. The iron filings should form the shape of the magnetic field around it. If that does not work, here is a link to a picture... http://www.fi.edu/htlc/teachers/lettieri/magneticfields.jpg Hope that helps.
