You can check employment listings to see what qualifications are needed. They do a background check and your past may have caught up with you in that regard. The one listing I saw said that 15 years must elapse and you must not be on probation.

In most cases he could overcome the ineligibility by returning to the court where he was convicted and seeking "relief from civil disabilities" which is something that a judge may choose to grant after a period of law abidance post-conviction. However, even with such a certificate, a felon will tend to have a difficult time obtaining any white collar (e.g. "office") or other professional employment. It's not necessarily inconceivable for a felon to become a police officer, especially where the criminal record is relatively limited and includes only non-violent crimes not involving dishonesty. Skilled blue collar trades (e.g. plumber, electrician) are popular with felons since opportunities in these trades do tend to be open to felons and offer decent pay and benefits, however again individual state licensing issues and prohibitions against felons should be consulted. Check with a union apprenticeship program which will offer paid training and steady work thereafter.
