Most grocery stores in New York City do not carry wine, no. Unless it's cooking wine or cooking sherry. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but I have never seen wine in a New York City grocery store. They have beer usually, but not wine. And they definitely do not carry any hard liquor.
Edited months later to add: the D'Agostino's supermarket near my house now sells wine, so, I guess it is possible to find wine in some New York City grocery stores.
