No way, one are the other has to be taken out to repair.
Sometimes it's possible to change the big end bearings by pulling the sump off. But to get to the small end you need to get the pistons out. And if you're pulling the sump, and the head(s) you might as well get the motor out first as it'll probably be faster.

Remove the trasnsmission and you can then replace the seal.
They can usually be pried out with a screwdriver and knocked back in. Most can be got to with the motor in place somehow. The 2 in the back of the block require either the motor or trans. to be pulled. For me, pulling the motor requires less effort. Less wiring and plumbing.

Motor oil does in fact freeze. Most motor oil never actually reaches the point where it is cold enough to freeze though.
