∙ 10y agoWhile it is possible for HIV to be spread if a tattoo needle were used on another person, HIV lives such a short time outside the body that the needle would have to be re-used very quickly. It is more common for hepatitis to be spread in this manner.
A reputable tattoo artist uses single-use needles, avoiding the chance of the needles being a vector for disease.

∙ 13y agoA properly performed tattoo cannot kill you, assuming you aren't allergic to the ink used (I'm not sure if anyone is allergic to the ink?). You could possibly get an infection or communicable disease if the the tattoo artist reuses old needles, doesn't wear gloves, etc. You should check out the tattoo parlor for overall cleanliness, make sure the artist uses new needles (watch him/her open the package to be certain), wears gloves, swabs you with an antiseptic before beginning and periodically throughout, uses clean guaze/bandages, etc.
