This is a potentially divisive issue, so please consider both viewpoints in the following answer.

Answer 1:

No, drinking alcohol is a sin.

Proverbs 20:1 (KJV) Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 23:31 (KJV) Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

Proverbs 23:32 (KJV) At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

Proverbs 23:34 (KJV) Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

There 10 Hebrew words translated into the 1 English word wine. The Hebrew language doesn't have a word for "juice" so when the Hebrew was speaking of "Grape Juice" the translators translated that word into our English word "wine". Most people don't know that and that is where a lot of confusion comes into play. The Bible always forbids the drinking of alcohol.

The following is a list of words tranlated into the English word wine.

Answer 2:There is no mention in the Bible of drinking wine being a sin. It is only a sin when done so in excess, causing drunkenness. In Titus 2:3 for example, there is a clear warning against becoming "enslaved to a lot of wine". In the Old Testament it was forbidden for the priests to drink wine before entering the Holy place.

There are several cases of wine-drinking mentioned in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and they are not all negative.

1. The Passover Cup involved wine; in fact, partaking of the Passover Cup meant drinking from four ritual cups of wine. This is important - it sets the scene for how Christ celebrated Passover himself, and how He shared it with his disciples the night before he was crucified.

2. Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana.

3. In 1 Timothy 5:23, Paul advised young Timothy to "Use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent cases of sickness." Note that Timothy was warned to use a little wine - that is, use it in moderation. Wine was necessary in the early days of the church as it killed the bacteria commonly found in the water, since they did not have purification systems that modern man enjoys. But despite it being a cultural thing, there is not warning against having a little wine for other occasions.

To suggest that wine is a sin is an extremist view. Many churches use wine at Holy Communion. That would be suggesting that, every time they remember Jesus's sacrifice in the way He commanded, all partakers of Communion would be sinning. However, in deference to those who feel uncomfortable taking fermented drink, many of these same churches offer the alternative of grape juice.

From a personal point of view, as a teetotaller who is not Baptist but certainly moves in Baptist circles, I can assure you that, even though you are baptised in the Baptist denomination, you are still permitted to drink wine. I have known Baptist deacons and pastors who will occasionally drink wine. There is nothing wrong with it.

Baptism takes away our sins and it was prefigured through water because water cleanses. Thus, we are being washed by water.
