You may drink coffee in moderation without worrying. The latest scientific information shows that 1-2 cups of coffee a day are safe. I'd stay away from multiple super-venti-grand-giganto lattes with extra shots, though! The only problem with too much coffee would be that you'd be more jittery than normal because of the thyroid medication. Basically, you can tell if you've had enough coffee. When you start feeling jittery, it's time to stop and drink less next time.
I am a 65 year old female. Had my Thyroid totally removed at the age of 28. Mine was Hyper. Before it was removed I drank coffee heavily. After it was removed, I resumed my coffee intake along with my Synthroid Pill which I have to take the rest of my life. The caffeine didn't bother me years ago. But! Now if I drink coffee it makes me hyper and sick to my stomach. Even Tea that has Caffeine in it bothers me. Also, if White Sugar is used it adds to the nervous feeling after drinking. To stay on the UNshakey side I don't use White Sugar at all or drink coffee or tea with caffeine.
If you take anything after surgery which is rich in sugar and caffeine, I think it is harmful. so it must be avoided until you are completely healthy

A thyroid uptake scan wouldn't normally be needed unless it is suspected that thyroid tissue was missed during surgery (sometimes thyroid tissue can be found in other areas of the body), or the reason for the surgery was cancer and the removal of all the tissue is vital.

Most thyroid patients take their thyroid medication in the morning, and some take it before they go to bed.Prescribed thyroid medication will state on the bottle the proper way to take it. Typically it will say on the bottle to take one tablet in the morning, on an empty stomach, with plenty of water. It is important to take it with water, and on an empty stomach, because it will allow the thyroid medication to be absorbed into the bloodstream. It is best to wait at least 30 minutes before eating food. If you eat immediately after taking your thyroid medication, drink coffee, drink alcohol, or even add Metamusil to your water, this can affect the overall effectiveness of your thyroid medication. Doctors will note to not take antacids, calcium or iron within four hours of taking the medication. If you have any questions about when to take your thyroid medication consult your doctor.
